Jim Letham

We are a long-established mixed-voice (soprano, alto, tenor, bass) community choir of over 40 singers, based in the central Scottish Borders.

New members are always welcome - why not come and give us a try?

Typically, we present two main concerts each year. One is before Christmas and is a mixture of choral works and carol singing. The other is in May, when the choir usually sings one or two major choral works. We are a friendly choir and will always welcome new members. There's no need for an audition. We ask that singers pay an annual subscription which is used to cover our running costs.

Our musical director Jim Letham is a well-known figure in music circles in the Borders. Previously Principal Teacher of music at Hawick High School, he is a composer, conductor (also directing the Abbey Consort) and singer as well as a versatile accompanist. We are honoured that he has found time among his many activities to join us. We are equally pleased to have Anne Kerr as our superb rehearsal pianist.

We rehearse on a Wednesday evening, from 7.30 to 9.30 p.m. (with a 15 minute break) in the Lucy Sanderson Hall in Galashiels. Jim and Anne always try to make our rehearsals as enjoyable and fun as possible, whilst at the same time constantly trying to improve our musical standard. The particular pieces or sections Jim would like to concentrate on at each rehearsal are usually sent round each week, so that we can make the best use of our rehearsal time.

Our new regular rehearsal venue has a lovely piano, improved lighting and some interesting murals related to its historical association with Gala Mill. More information may be found here.

Our name is taken from the Eildon Hills, which form a prominent landmark in the Scottish Borders, lying just south of Melrose. There being three hills, the Romans named the place Trimontium and built a large fort there.

We give our concerts in Melrose Parish Church, an elegant Georgian building with a fine acoustic and to which we attract a loyal and enthusiastic audience.
